Josiah Wuermli, a mobile school chef from NYES Catering - North Yorkshire Council, has emerged victorious in the Yorkshire & Humberside School Chef of the Year (SCOTY) regional final.

The regional final took place at the Rational kitchen at Leeds City College Leeds and involved three other school chefs from the local area. As the winning chef, Josiah will advance to the SCOTY national final which is taking place at The School Food People Show & Forum in the summer.

For his main course Josiah cooked roasted chicken served in soft tacos with pickled lime slaw and coriander drizzle, fried rice and charred sweetcorn. For dessert he made churros made with custard powder served with an apple custard compote.

The competition, which is sponsored by Bisto by Premier Foods, aims to showcase the importance of feeding schoolchildren a hot, healthy and nutritious school meal every day. Helen Brooks from Vertas was named as the runner-up in this SCOTY heat.

Competitors must prepare, cook and present four portions of a main course and dessert with a maximum food cost of £1.75 per head in 90 minutes that meet the School Food Standards and Eat Well Guide.

School meal providers can register for free entry to the School Food People Show to watch the national finalists in action.
