Plaid Cymru pledges to expand free school meals to more secondary pupils

27 May 2026
The First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth has confirmed that all secondary school pupils whose parents receive universal credit will be eligible for free school meals from September 2026.

The policy abolishes the current £7,400 annual income cap for eligibility, bringing Wales in line with the system used in England. All pupils at Welsh primary schools already receive access to free school meals.

First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth said: “To help households with the cost-of-living crisis, we'll expand access to free school meals to secondary school pupils from families in receipt of universal credit from September, supporting students’ learning, giving families one less cost to worry about.”

On day two of the School Food Show & Forum, immediate past chair of The School Food People Judith Gregory will be hosting a session titled ‘The Welsh Manifesto’.

The May Senedd elections in Wales could have a significant impact on the school food service. Gregory, who is education catering business manager at Cardiff Council, will give an overview of the potential impacts, including the rolling out UFSM in secondary schools and the review of healthy eating regulations.
