The School Food People to host webinar on revised School Meal Standards
The session is designed to explain the updated standards, outline their implications for caterers, and guide stakeholders on how to respond to the ongoing Government consultation. The webinar will be led by chair Brad Pearce, alongside Lee Petar of Menara Advisors.
For the first time in over ten years the School Food Standards in England are being reviewed. The School Food People says it is ‘imperative’ that members, from across the sector input into the consultation so that their views are represented in Government decision-making.
The deadline to the consultation is 12th June 2026. Most changes are expected from September 2027 (secondary schools from September 2028). In general The School Food People welcomes the standards but it states they need to be realistic and appropriately funded.
Pearce said: “It is crucial we get as many responses back as possible, so we are arranging a webinar for all industry members to join to enable us to share the key points from an association perspective but to also give you some practical help and advice on how may want to respond.”
Key Government proposals include:
- A lead governor will have oversight of the standards, ensuring they are enforced.
- There will be increased visibility of menus and food policy, and the need to consider how packed lunch policies support a consistent approach to healthier choice across the school day.
- Fibre will be increased.
- Restriction of sweetened baked products and desserts, as well as the restriction of sugar, honey and syrups from being added to food or drinks during or after preparation.
- Setting limits on how often processed meat and batter coated items can be served.
- Restricting the use of cheese as a main ingredient every day.
- Restricting snacks to fruit, vegetables, savoury crackers, and breadsticks only.
The webinar is open to anyone across the school food and catering sector, with participants encouraged to attend and share their views as part of the consultation process. Register to join here
